Castle Howard - The Imperial Ice Stars, The Sleeping Beauty on Ice
Wednesday 30th July – Sunday 3rd August
This summer the world-renowned Imperial Ice Stars will be performing 'The Sleeping Beauty on Ice' in a sumptuous Tented Ice Palace within the magnificent grounds of Castle Howard from Wednesday 30th July to Sunday 3rd August 2008.
To Tchaikovsky’s glorious music, the Imperial Ice Stars tell the classic love story of ‘The Sleeping Beauty on Ice’ through sublime world-class ice dancing, including breathtaking high speed throws, awe-inspiring aerial gymnastics, stilt skating and fire effects.
The 23-strong cast of Olympic, World, European and National Championship skaters, including Ilya Klimkin (Turin 2006 Winter Olympics) in the role of Catalabutte, glide through this much-loved story with grace and athleticism. Daring skating feats, normally only seen in Olympic arenas, are performed within the confines of a frozen theatre stage in the intimacy of the Tented Ice Palace.
The Tented Ice Palace will be the ultimate in luxury, with reserved seating cushioned for comfort, bespoke chandeliers and carpeted throughout. Regardless of the weather The Tented Ice Palace will be air-conditioned to the perfect temperature and encompass an entrance foyer, a spacious fully-licensed Ice Bar and the Grand Theatre marquee.
‘The Sleeping Beauty on Ice’ will be performed in the Grand Theatre marquee on a 15m x 13m theatre stage with a surface of real ice. The production has been re-choreographed by award-winning Artistic Director Tony Mercer, widely regarded as the world’s leading creator of theatre on ice, together with 2002 World Champion and Olympic Silver Medallist Ilia Averbukh, and international medallist Maria Orlova.

Castle Howard Proms Spectacular
On Saturday 16th August, the UK's biggest 'Last Night of the Proms' style concert outside of Hyde Park returns again to the amazing setting of Castle Howard, for an unforgettable evening of popular classics, flag-waving fun and a truly amazing firework finale.
The ever exuberant Jae Alexander returns to conduct the English National Orchestra through an evening of popular classics, movie themes and all the Proms favourites, including 1812 Overture, Rule Britannia and Land of Hope & Glory. Jae will be joined by soprano Janet Mooney and tenor Wynne Evans, who has become a firm favourite at Castle Howard with his breathtaking rendition of Nessun Dorma. Also back by popular demand is pilot Flt Lieutenant Charles Brown, who will again be performing a stunning aerial display (to music) in an original WW2 Spitfire.
New this year is Jon Lord, founder member of legendary rock group Deep Purple, and renowned worldwide as one of the UK’s most exciting classical composers and performers. The keyboard wizard behind timeless hits including Smoke On The Water, Child In Time and many more, Jon has also recorded and performed numerous classical works with some of the world’s premier orchestras. We are thrilled to be welcoming this true music legend to the Castle Howard Proms to perform with his band Gemini and the English National Orchestra.
