13 – 15 August - Whitby Gegatta, Whitby
One of the oldest sea Regattas in England drawing large crowds into the town. It all started in early the 1800s with fishermen competing against each other in their fishing smacks and salmon cobbles. Gradually yacht racing formed the greater part of the Regatta and was recorded in 1847 with "The Whitby Challenge Cup".
Due to the high cost of building these large yachts they have slowly disappeared from the scene and in about 1872 competitive rowing came to the forefront. Today one of the main attractions of the Regatta are the three major rowing clubs in the region - the Jet Works Amateur Rowing Club, the Friendship Amateur Rowing Club and Whitby Fisherman's Amateur Rowing Club.
The most coveted trophy rowed for today is the "Wilson Cup" presented by the late Alderman JET Wilson J.P - C.C. of West Hartlepool in 1901. 1929 saw the first fancy dress and decorated carts, which form the present day's regatta and carnival.
So come and join us for three full days of entertainment for all the family to enjoy, including yacht racing, rowing races, fun fair and various free forms of entertainment around the town of Whitby, finishing with a prize presentation and spectacular firework display!

17 – 20 August - Welcome To Yorkshire Ebor Festival, York
Our oldest, richest, fastest, and most famous races provide sporting excellence combined with fashion and fun over four fabulous days.
We are pleased to confirm that Saturday 20th August 2011 will become the final day of the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival this season set to feature the totesport Ebor itself.
The traditional highlight of the season on the Knavesmire will commence on Wednesday 17th August and run for four days, finishing for the first time with a weekend date.
The prestigious Group One Juddmonte International will remain as the highlight of the opening day, a contest ranked in the top ten middle distance contests in the world and won in 2009 by Sea The Stars, considered by many as the best thoroughbred for a generation. Last year’s winner was, the recently retired, Rip Van Winkle a triple crowned Group One winner.
For many race goers the opening day of the festival is the day when they catch up with friends and look forward to a week of shared enjoyment. Form followers will watch the sportingbet.com Great Voltigeur with particular interest as this York Group Two has already produced thirteen winners of the final Classic of the year, the St. Léger. The racecourse team looks forward to this day and everything is fresh and exciting.
On all four days there will be a real sense of fashion, plenty of hats and sharp suits mixed with those sporting more relaxed summer clothing, however for many there remains an extra special feel about Thursday as it is Ladies day, complete with the chance to win a trip to Dubai courtesy of Marriott hotels. The sporting action attracts the best fillies as the Group One Darley Yorkshire Oaks and Jaguar Cars Lowther Stakes are highly treasured titles.
Friday offers the chance to race into the weekend, perhaps enjoying a short break in historic York or the wider white rose county click here for more information on staying in Yorkshire). The fastest race of the season, the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes often decides the accolade of leading sprinter and is a blur of colour that needs to be seen and heard to be believed. The smile on the faces of connections of Borderlescott, the 2007/2008 dual champion, trained locally by the Bastiman family is one of the great memories of recent years. Last year’s race saw Sole Power take the title as a surprise 100-1 winner!
The feature race of the Saturday will become the totesport Ebor, the oldest, probably most famous race at York and the richest handicap in Europe. The excitement that this famous handicap generates has been constant since the 1840s; Mudawin a winner at over 100-1, Sergeant Cecil, a victor who became horse of the year, Purple Moon who landed a nationwide gamble and then headed down under and very nearly became the first British trained winner of the Melbourne Cup - and that’s just in the last decade! The buzz about the racecourse on Ebor day is infectious as groups of friends enjoy, relax and hopefully unravel the puzzle to find the winner of the totesport Ebor.

20 – 26 August – Whitby Folk Week, Whitby
Seven days of dancing in the streets, music and singing in the pubs, concerts and dances until late into the night, and a whole lot more. Seven days of meeting old friends and making new ones.
Altogether, Whitby Folk Week is a compelling reason for ignoring the ‘Costas’ and heading to the north east of England in late August each year.
This long-standing celebration of the traditional music, dance and song of the British Isles has taken on the trappings of a tradition in its own right. With over 600 events covering workshops, concerts, singarounds, dance, sessions, street entertainment and the extensive ‘fringe’ events that blossom spontaneously. Folk Week is a festival that no lover of real music should miss.
Whitby itself is filled with examples of our rich and colourful heritage. This picturesque seaport town has a greater concentration of visitor experiences per square mile than in many of the better-known tourist destinations. From the Jet workshop to the Dracula Experience via Captain Cook’s cottage and the ruined Abbey dominating the cliff tops above the town, there is culture and tradition in abundance. Folk week could not have a better setting.
For the ‘inner person’ there are many excellent restaurants, cafes and bars, real-ale pubs, and the best fish and chips in the northern hemisphere. And all this can be digested in the company of some of the finest musicians and singers in the British Isles.
